So, it is still thriving to a lesser or greater extent. I know that we have "shaahii dastarKhvaan", "DaalDaa dastarKhvaan" and the like as titles of books. Jokes apart, my point was that the coming of "sandalii/kursii-mez" into the linguistic and cultural background, might have had something to do with 'dastarKhvaan"'s displacement. Good to know this but "maashaa' Allah", when you invite me round your "daultat-Khaanah", I would n't mind sitting on the floor to eat because my knees are still pretty strong! It goes without saying that even though I am aware of the "vaav-i- ma'duulah" or the silent vaa'o, I am 'clinging" onto the original pronunication as per your "ham-vatan", Talat Mahmood (marHuum)! But this meaning, I think, is hardly used, if ever, in Urdu.īTW, in our home we use درسترخوان all the time, although for generations we've been using chairs and tables! and yes, خوان xwaan / ḵẖẉ aa n indeed means adventure, as well. Now, however, we write it as one word : درسترخوان On my last visit to Pakistan, I especially went to Urdu bazar to buy this book for my son.
